Battlefield 1 review: Is it Best WW1 game?
A new battlefield game is always a challenge. The series key features are massive ground, air, and water combat, shooting close to realistic, and detailed reconstruction of the period where a game takes place. While most of the developers explore modern or futuristic settings, DICE made a daring move, choosing World War I as a setting for Battlefield 1. The final product was made according to the series’ traditions but enhanced with features of WWI. These features make Battlefield 1 worth playing.
Battlefield 1 Campaign Review: War Stories
World War I was one of the major conflicts of the 20th century, and yet people can’t say much about it. Someone killed someone important, and the whole of Europe was drowned in blood for four long years. WWI happened at the cutting edge of technological progress – a lot of tools of destruction were invented and tested during the war. This background served as a stage for five separate stories that the game tells the players.
Unlike previous games of the series, Battlefield 1 shows five different campaigns, set on different sides of the world during WWI. On the one hand, we don’t get too attached to the characters and barely can live through their dramas. On the other hand, the scenery changes fast, and we can see that anyone can be a hero, no matter what skin color, nationality, or gender a person has. Is Battlefield 1 Dead as a story game? Let’s find out.
Battlefield 1 Review: Storm of steel
The game opens with a Battlefield 1 campaign set in 1918. A player takes control of several members of Harlem Hellfighters and has to fight tooth and nail against the German troops. The prologues set a perfect mood for the rest of the game and other campaigns. The player lost several of the soldiers and then switched to the remaining troops. In the end, there are only two combatants left: the player’s Harlem Hellfighter and a German soldier. They try to take out each other but realize that the situation is futile and give up a fight. It is a powerful opening for the game.
Through Mud and Blood
This time a player takes the role of Daniel Edwards, a chauffeur assigned to a British tank Mark V. This Battlefield 1 campaign takes place in 1918 during the Battle of Cambrai. In this episode, a player learns how to operate a tank in the game and appreciate one of the most beautiful locations in the game.
Friends in High Places
This chapter is dedicated to the American pilot Clyde Backburn. Here DICE tries to show character depth and gives Backburn some negative personality traits such as uncontrolled gambling that dragged him into trouble. Despite being a bit clumsy in terms of storytelling, this episode shows a grandiose air battle over London and teaches players how to pilot WWI aircraft.
Battlefield 1 Review: Avanti Savoia
This chapter offers more focused and grounded gameplay. This time we play as Luca Cochiolla, in the autumn of 1918, in Northern Italy. The story of Luca focuses on personal war drama. It shows how a person goes through losses of wartime. The gameplay is more about ground operations, but the scenery and combat situations change at a rapid pace and do not get boring. This chapter may be the most meaningful among others due to the qualitative directing and interesting shooting segments.
The Runner
Frederick Bishop is a new character under the player’s control. This chapter discloses some events of the Gallipoli Campaign of 1915. The chapter is characterized by active usage of light ground vehicles, open spaces for battling the enemies, and a decent, but not amazing, storyline. The Runner shows the scale of the war and the importance of a single message for armies.
Nothing is Written
This Spring 1918 episode brings some exotic to the usual routine of Battlefield 1. This time we play as Zara Ghufran, an Ottoman rebel who cooperates with a British intelligence agency. Zara is a woman; therefore, her gameplay is focused on stealth and silent walkthrough. Once again, Battlefield 1 shows magnificent views, tosses different gameplay situations, and familiarizes a player with game mechanics.
In general, all of the enlisted campaigns are a big and pompous tutorial before the main dish – multiplayer battles. Battlefield 1 servers are still operational and will be for a long time. Therefore, you have the necessary comfort to learn the game’s basics and dive into its meaty part.
Battlefield 1 Multiplayer
Multiplayer is the crux of Battlefield. 64 players on a map are a far more spectacular view than a single-player and a bunch of not so brilliant bots around. Simultaneous usage of air and ground machines, artillery fire, and picturesque scenery create an unfeigned feeling of a massive war around you.
Battlefield 1 maps are pretty variable and can offer players rural landscapes, narrow European city streets, and wild deserts. Besides, maps differ not only in view but in objectives also. A desert map with a huge armored train is like nothing else.
Unlike the popular opinion of a small weapons variety, Battlefield 1 shows a decent list of cold steel arms and firearms. In general, the weapons have a good balance; you would not find an ultimate gun to conquer all of the battles. Is Battlefield 1 Dead as a multiplayer game? Hardly.
Battlefield 1 Weapons
However, the guns in the game lack customization. Usually, it is a scope of different gradation, bipod, or a bayonet. Still, these details are pretty neat and provide some sort of personalization to your weapons. Instead of rich customization from Battlefield 4, we have a lot of skins for weapons. You may obtain such skins from special battle packs that drop randomly after the completion of the match. Gamers who played CS: GO, and similar shooters should be familiar with the mechanic. There is a gradation of a rarity for skins from regular to legendary. If you have the same skin again, you may spray it into details that serve as a currency for buying battle packs. This is fair for all versions of the game, pc, ps4, and battlefield 1 Xbox One.
In general, all of the weapons in the game may feel a bit faster than you expected in comparison with previous games of the series. If you prefer automatic rifles and powerful LMGs, then Battlefield 1 has much to please your trigger finger. On top of that, the game has drag and gravity influence on bullets, which increases the bullets` velocity. This factor speeds things up even more and contributes to the authenticity of the gunplay.
There are six categories of weapons: shotguns, SMGs, LMGs, semi-autos, sidearms, and sniper rifles. Shotguns are perfect for close distance combat and city maps; SMGs are fine for short-range rapid-fire; LMGs are the tools of destruction at the medium range; Semi-autos are well-balanced Battlefield 1 weapons for offense and defense. Sidearms are the weapons of last chance but may save the situation; sniper rifles are for the most skilled and concentrated players. There is a ton of variety within these categories. Each weapon type has several weapons to choose from. A lot of modern weapons originated during WWI. You may try predecessors of the most famous SMGs and Automatic rifles of the world in this game.
Besides the variety, the guns are pretty efficient too. The weapons achieve their goals with persistence and highly satisfactory visual and audio effects. Whether you are turning an enemy into cheese with a shotgun or sniping across the map, you will feel the weapons as if they were in your hands. The customization of weapons is more focused. The game uses pre-sets loadouts that have variable configurations of the guns. You may still customize your guns to attune your playstyle and do it in a more focused way. Each of the weapons has three configurations, which complement different playstyles. These configurations may be edited as well to achieve the most comfortable experience with the Battlefield 1 weapons.
Besides the variability of firearms, Battlefield 1 may offer plenty of choice for cold steel arms. Knives, bayonets, sabers, and spears were an essential part of WW1 battles, and you may carry one of them as well. Each of the cold weapons has a unique pattern, attack speed, and damage. Experiment to find the best blade for you. Besides the killing, cold arms may be used as tools to cut barbed wire, destroy barricades and even damage light vehicles. In Battlefield 1 ps4 it is a pure pleasure to cut through your enemies.
Another special move available with cold steel arms is bayonet charges. Attach a bayonet to your rifle and strike fear into your enemies’ hearts with fast and lethal charge.
The variability of explosives is present as well, and frag grenades are only at the top of the list. There are gas grenades, which fit for smoking enemies out. Gas grenades have low but persistent damage that fits perfectly for closed rooms. There are incendiary grenades with the highest explosive damage provided in a short time and much more. Rightly applied grenade is a thin line between victory and defeat.
Finally, the audio quality of the guns does not disappoint. DICE knows how to deliver the right impact from the guns as well as the right audio effects. Echoes, reloading, and different calibers sound differently. If you have a good audio system, you will appreciate the masterful work with gun sounds in Battlefield 1. Graphics also deserves praise. Battlefield 1 pc still looks gorgeous.
Battlefield 1 maps and game Modes
If you saw Battlefield 1 trailers (and if you are reading this article, then there is a high chance you did), then you should have noticed a variability of locations where the action takes place. Battlefield 1 will bring you to new, interesting locations in one of the most epic shooters in gaming history. There is more information about the Battlefield 1 maps and the modes below.
Battlefield 1 review: Game Modes
Conquest
Conquest is the most popular mode of the Battlefield series. Battlefield 1 player count of 64 players who compete over key points on a map. Capture combines all elements of massive battles and brings the atmosphere of a battlefield. Here you can play as a simple trooper or operate heavy war vehicles.
Dominance
Dominance is more focused than Capture game mode. Dominance is concentrated around close combat. The game mode aims to capture strategic points but on a smaller scale than in Capture. Ready your shotguns and sharpen your axes. Here you will have to face your opponents literally. You don’t have to ask, “do people still play battlefield 1” because the Dominance game mode proves that there are plenty of Battlefield 1 players.
Operations
Operations is a new way to experience online matches in Battlefield. This mode gives you a chance to wield war on the fronts of WWI. In a chain of connected battles, the attacking team tries to seize the territory and push the frontline, while the defending team tries to push the attackers back. If the defending side could not hold the position, then the battle is over. They will retreat to another map and will try to hold the attackers again. Even if the players lost a sector, they could still recoup with the support of heavy machines. Here Battlefield 1 player count shines in full glory.
Battlefield 1 maps
Amien
This map shows a fierce battle in a glorious city. You will fight on the streets and squares of the French city Amien during the Spring German attack; battles take place on crumbling streets, in courtyards, around the bridges, and railroads. British and German troops try to seize the center of the city desperately.
Battle in San-Canteen
This time, players will see large-scale battles on twisted battlefields in northern France. German Army draws all of its forces to break through British defense. Get ready for the tough strikes on Sen-Canteen trenches. Be one of the first who will storm the Travis village, which was not touched by the war until now. Once again, Battlefield 1 player count contributes to authenticity.
Monte-Grappa
Take part in one of the last battles among kingly peaks of the Venetian Alps. There is a tough battle, even for seasoned soldiers, for mountain fortresses high in the sky. Use the giant weapons of the fortresses to stop the enemy’s advance. Austro-Hungarian Empire has an edge in this fierce battle, but the Italian Army would not stop until it returns what belongs to the country by right.
Of course, this list of Battlefield 1 maps and modes is not exhausted. There are far more battle scenarios and stages for them in the actual game. These are the most representative and give the necessary understanding of Battlefield 1 atmosphere and pace.
Battlefield 1 DLC
Battlefield 1 They Shall not Pass
This is the first DLC included in the Battlefield 1 premium pass. The main feature of “They Shall Not Pass” is the French army, which a lot of gamers waited for at the game’s release. In addition to the French army, four additional maps depicted the most iconic battles of the respective theatre of operations. Each map is unique in its way. This Battlefield 1 DLC opens with a chamber skirmish at Fort Vo, where players have to explore dark corners of the war fortifications. The usual war laws do not work here; flamethrowers, gas grenades, and shotguns rule the show.
Covered with poppies, “Breakthrough” is the next map to explore. It is one of the best looking maps in the game. However, you should not let your guard down. There are a lot of hidden places and corners to make an ambush.
“Verden’s Heights” easily may be called the best map of the battlefield 1 they shall not pass DLC. A real fiery hell in which European woods turned after days of artillery bombing. Besides, two new operations were included as well. Each of them is a chain of two maps, linked by logical storytelling.
The next map – Suason. Unlike Fort Vo, there is plenty of space because Suason was the battleground for one of the widest scale tank battles of WWI.
Battlefield 1: A new mode – Frontline
An addon could not be without a new regime. This new game mode got the name “Frontline.” It is a combination of the usual “Conquest” and “Strike” and offers two teams to clash in saturated and tense battles. Battlefield 1 player count contributes to the matches’ intensity too.
The idea of the mode is to make all players, without exceptions to fight over one single point on a map. When one of the teams captures the point, then the frontline moves; and the fight goes on to another point. If one of the teams could not stand up and fight, then the fires of war blaze on a base, which holds the last frontier – two telegraphs for connection with the main forces.
The new game mode is cool, but it does not bring anything new to the table. Still, the developers treated the new format carefully and balanced new maps well. There is only one hindrance: there is no time limit on “Frontline,” literally. If the teams are approximately equal, then the game can last an hour or even more, until people get bored and leave. There is hope that this aspect will be fixed in the future.
Battlefield 1 review: New Vehicles and an Elite Class
Fights between German and France, described in historical chronicles, are distinguished by the high number of battle vehicles. French theatre of operations was the most important direction for Germans. Therefore, they dropped all they have into it. There is no surprise that with “They Shall Not Pass” the game got the biggest tank in Battlefield 1 – Char2C. Its appearance frightened players on virtual arenas, needless to say, how fearsome it was when the tanks were storming the battlefields.
Another new machine is the French Sen-Shamon. It is a far predecessor of the modern armored personnel carriers, slow and clumsy. However, a skillful team may gain a great advantage from the machine on a battlefield. In the absence of anti mech weapons, Sen-Shamon is an invincible mobile fortress stuck with machine guns.
A new elite class, trench raider, is a fine addition to this Battlefield 1 DLC as well. This daredevil has enough armor to run straight into enemies’ positions and cleanse trenches from soldiers. The raider does not have firearms, but he is armed with an amusing club and has grenades for every occasion.
Battlefield 1: In the name of the Tsar
The second DLC for one of the best online shooters covers not only WWI but the civil war in Russia as well. The key content of the “In the Name of the Tsar” DLC is the new maps that recreate such dear snowy landscapes. In the case of the previous game of the series, each of the DLCs counted four new maps. This time, the developers from DICE pleased players with six maps the second time.
The most large-scale locations are “Lupkow Pass” and “Volga River”. The first is a rocky hollow that turns the battle into a “vertical” axis with height control. “Volga River” is a large plain with tough positional battles and a small number of covers. Another massive map with plenty of space is “Galicia.”
There are small maps that concentrate battles around their central points, the most fortified of all. “Brusilov Keep” and “Tsaritsyn” are those maps. The “Albion” map stands alone: the fights take place on several big islands; so, accurate logistics and the right usage of boats give a significant advantage.
Unlike the previous Battlefield 1 DLC, “In the Name of the Tsar” has powerful charisma. All of the maps are atmospheric; you can recognize Russia and adjoined territories easily. The landscape is authentic as well: high snowdrifts, dense thickets, houses that still exist in private sectors.
In terms of the combatants, everything is fine as well. Even though Battlefield 1 is dedicated to WWI, the developers did not miss the chance to clash Red ones and White ones. History buffs will notice famous female death battalions. Female warriors fight exclusively on the Empire side, and only as scouts with sniper rifles. Russian voice scoring deserves another recognition. It is noticeable that Russian actors recorded the voices of different soldiers. If there is an accent here and there, it still does not spoil the overall impression.
BF1 in the name of the tsar weapons
The developers added new gear, which is characteristic of the Russian Empire and the Red Army. For example, soldiers can shoot from double-barreled guns, Fedorov assault rifle, massive machine gun Parabellum MG-14, and, of course, try a good, old Mosin rifle. By the way, you can’t get all of the new guns from the start. Almost all of the new weaponry players acquire through completing special requirements. Usually, a player can reach them pretty fast, but some achievements require big goals, such as 300 kills from a single shot rifle.
There are new types of vehicles as well. However, there are fewer novelties here: Russian bomber “Ilya Muromets”, a new armored car Putilov-Garford and a stationary gun available on several maps.
Battlefield 1 review: New Mode and Specializations
Most of the players prefer Conquest, where they have to capture the points. However, DICE developers keep adding new modes to the game. “In the Name of the Tsar” shows a new mode, “Supply Drop”. The developers found inspiration in the constant lack of medicine and supplies on the Eastern front for this game mode. Both teams start a match practically without equipment. To survive and defeat the opponent, players have to watch over drops of special crates. The crates contain weapons, ammo, and everything a player needs for a battle. However, if you pick one crate, you can’t reach another. Therefore, both teams are always at the same odds. Battlefield 1 player count is another factor that contributes to the game mode’s fun. A pretty engaging mode that reminds gun game from Battlefield 4. Besides, like in Battlefield 4, Battlefield 1 has specializations again. Each class has three skill slots with different abilities in them, which allows even deeper soldiers’ customization.
Battlefield 1: Turning Tides
Open a new page of the World War’s dawn with the “Turning Tides” DLC. BF1 turning tides release date is December 11, 2017. The expansion adds new fronts of WWI to the game: Gallipoli and the North Sea. There are four new maps in this expansion. Cape Helles is a vast battlefield with every type of combat: ground, naval, and air. Storm the Ottoman Empire’s fortifications with the allied forces. Achi Baba is a map concentrated around fierce ground troops’ battles. This map shows a treacherous push toward the infamous hilltop of the Gallipoli peninsula. Heligoland Bight shows the opposite side of war and concentrates around naval battles between Royal Marines and the German Navy. Zeebrugge can easily be the best map of the DLC: it shows a daring storm of the Belgian port Zeebrugge by British troops. Marvelous looking and variable Battlefield 1 gameplay won’t leave you bored.
New Troops and Class
Royal marines join the party with this DLC, making battles more authentic and variable. A new elite class was added as well. An infiltrator is an agile soldier of support who relies on sprint boost, spontaneous artillery strikes, and supply drops for the allies. There are new regimes, vehicles, and specializations as well. “Turning Tides” holds the high plank of the previous two DLCs. Battlefield 1 Turning Tides weapons do not disappoint also.
Battlefield 1 Apocalypse “All Quiet on the Western Front”
This is the last DLC for Battlefield 1 premium pass. The war that will end all other wars. However, there is no end to be seen. This is hell on Earth. Take part in the most fierce battles of deadly World War I. Apocalypse is the fourth DLC for Battlefield 1. There are five new maps for online modes. The bloody mess of Passchendaele and the clash of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Italy near Caporetto are the most famous battles of WWI. The Earth is drenched with blood. Devastating artillery strikes turned the picturesque wheat fields of the Somme banks into deserted wastelands. The maps “London Calling” and “Razor’s Edge” were created especially for air battles. Realize your dreams about conquering the skies in the new game mode “Air Assault”, which expands the horizons of Battlefield 1; bf1 player count feels like never before in the skies. “Apocalypsys” adds new vehicles, weapons, and gadgets as well. New titles, operations, specializations, and tags will make you earn them as well. Battlefield 1 Apocalypse is a fine conclusion for the great game.
Battlefield 1 Gameplay
Battlefield 1 follows the good old traditions of the series in terms of gameplay: throwing players in the heat of massive battles of the world’s most infamous conflicts. However, Battlefield 1 takes another step forward and adds the madness of WWI. There were no rules or humane restrictions; people just annihilated each other in every way possible. The masterful execution of WWI brutality via gameplay is one of the game’s brightest sides. Vehicles of WWI such as airships, dreadnoughts, and armored trains contribute to the authenticity and unusual feeling of Battlefield 1 gameplay. The trains may have hindrances in their defense but may cover the whole part of a frontline easily. The main caliber of such a monster may destroy an enemy’s vehicles across a map. The role of tanks changed as well: now they are not agile monsters covered with all sorts of weapons but primordial boxes of steel. They serve as mobile cover for soldiers and troops support, don’t expect that tanks will dominate the battlefield here. Airplanes are different too. Pilots may try to bomb someone on the ground or hunt down daredevils who decided to fly high in the skies. Gunships have four positions for shooters. There are very few limits for Battlefield 1.
Unfortunately, you can’t obliterate a map with yperite. Gas attacks in Battlefield 1 are fleeting, barely cover at least a house, and don’t change the course of a battle; BF1 player count is too modest for such massive attacks. It is uncomfortable to aim with a gas mask, so fighting inside a gas cloud became a total mess. Artillery strikes and main calibers of heavy machines have much more impact on storming the battlefields. There is no such cover in Battlefield 1 that will not be destroyed till the end of a match. If you begin a game on a map covered with different sorts of hideouts, at the end of the match, you’ll have to hide among ruins and rare walls. The diversity of maps shows a tendency toward a certain gameplay style: city maps are pretty good for creating ambushes, while the open desert and sea maps reward players with high shooting skills but not positioning. Battlefield 1 servers are still full of players; you won’t miss any fun, that’s for sure.
Technical progress, albeit technical regress, has a significant impact on usual gameplay as well. Instead of modern guns, players have primitive machine and submachine guns, very fast and almost uncontrollable. Some guns may surprise with recoil; some may demonstrate unusual ballistics when a bullet goes to the ground even at a minimal distance. Battlefield 1 teaches you to shoot again, even if you are a seasoned FPS player. DICE developers did not arm each class with rifles; only scouts have them. Besides, there are no upgrades, such as collimator scopes. Therefore, the fighting distance became much shorter.
Battlefield 1 PC is the best shooting experience among other versions of the game.
However, all of these elements do not work separately. Nor dreadnoughts, nor gas attacks of artillery strikes won’t make fun on their own. Nevertheless, when six tens of people of BF1 player count, fight, shoot, and kill each other on a virtual battlefield, it creates an immersive dive into the setting. All things, big and small, such as marching toward the enemy’s point or machine gun’s recoil, contribute to the atmosphere. There was no such nightmare, in a good sense, in the series before, and Battlefield 1 gameplay is bright proof of it.
Is Battlefield 1 Dead: Conclusion by Insider.Games
Summing up this Battlefield 1 review, there is no doubt that the game is not dead, despite a few hindrances here and there and a short single Battlefield 1 campaign. If you give the game a chance, it will find its place on your hard drive for a long time. It is a complex and well-developed game with variable game modes, decent graphics, and audio implementation. If you are a multiplayer shooter enthusiast, then you should check out Battlefield 1.
You may purchase Battlefield 1 on Pc and past-gent consoles. Besides Battlefield 1 steam version, there is an option to buy a game in the Origins store. Microsoft Store and PS store do have the game as well. Therefore, battlefield 1 PS4 or Xbox One is purely a choice of taste.
The game is a proud page in the Battlefield franchise history. The developers from DICE took the right decisions and answered the audience’s requests. It is a good game with dozens of hours of variable content, game modes, and achievements. It remains actual and brings fresh impressions in a well established online FPS genre. Do people still play battlefield 1? They sure do, don’t hesitate to join them.
