Spiderman 3 Review

About Spiderman 3 Review

Spiderman 3 is a game that was developed by Treyarch and Vicarious Visions and released in October 2007. The first group of developers is responsible for the Xbox 360, Play Station 3, and PC versions, while the latter made it available on portable consoles like PSP, Nintendo DS, and Game Boy.

The game didn’t surprise gamers with any outstanding innovative features and mechanics, but focused on polishing the already known ones, as will be explained later in this Spider Man 3 review.

The main story arcs and quests are based on Sam Raimi’s movie trilogy, with the addition of some classical (for the universe) conflicts with well-known villains and organized crime gangs.

What Is the Spiderman 3 Game About?

In the first minutes of the game, we’re welcomed by the familiar voice of Bruce Campbell and a traditional introduction. The game teaches the player basic mechanics like movement, using the web to swing between buildings, and so on.

The story of the Spider Man 3 game takes place after a year of Doctor Octopus’ death when our main character destroys all the evil plans of a newly-born “H-Bombs” gang.

At first, it may seem like the city is finally safe from crime, but as Spidey himself explains, there are still tons of problems. These include many new gangs, like previously mentioned H-Bombs, Dragon Tails, Arsenic Candies, and The Apocalypse.

Also, don’t forget about his main rival, mister Eddie Brock (Venom), and a reporter from Daily Bugle who blames the superhero for his father’s death. Right, it doesn’t seem like a big problem for a superhero. Fighting crime and evil rivals is a part of daily life, after all.

So, SpiderMan 3 The Video Game needs something major to fight against, an unknown alien creature that will influence Peter Parker’s mind, for example. There are some interesting plot twists, like the lizard sewer people, but the plot is generally traditional for a superhero game based on a movie.

Gameplay of The Game

As said before, the gameplay doesn’t bring us any unique mechanics or features. It doesn’t mean it’s boring though. Swinging on a web a few meters above crowds between the buildings with a huge speed is still cool. However, the AI of the pedestrians could be at least given a trigger to run away or become scared when something (a fight, for example) starts in their proximity.

Speaking about fights, the mechanics are neither perfect nor horrible. In short words, it’s exactly what you would expect from a game of that time. Punch, block, evade, all in that “wooden” manner that somehow manages to give you a good enough feeling of what’s happening.

Some missions in the Spiderman 3 game review are entertaining and fun, like chasing the cars, for example, while others are mundane and nerve-racking. Especially the boss fights that are held in that “press the counter-attack button in the right time to remove ¼  of boss’ health pool” manner.

Graphics

The graphical content of the game is around the same level as the gameplay. We don’t see astonishing landscapes of the city and 4k textures, but everything still looks fine. As the SpiderMan 3 game PC version was released at the same time as Xbox and PS3 versions, their standards corresponded with the console’s capabilities.

The easy way to explain the graphics is – think of GTA IV on the lowest settings. Okay, it may not be that bad, but you probably get an idea. Everything is square-ish, with only Spidey’s model being worth any attention. However, the picture still looks fine, as good as some medieval games PS4 of that time.

What also needs to be said in this Spider Man 3 review, is that we’re talking about PC/Xbox/PS3 versions mostly. PSP, Nintendo DS, and Game Boy ones are of lower quality and have a lot of content cut out of them.

Sound in The Game

If the visual part of the games was very limited by the computers, the same could never be said about the sound. The actors of the original trilogy voiced their heroes. For example:

  • Toby Maguire as Spider-Man ;
  • James Franco as Harry Osborn;
  • Topher Grace as Venom;
  • J.K Simmons as J.Jonah Jameson, and many others.

Also, the rest of the sound effects and soundtracks are done on a very high level. No wonder sounds play a very important part in the perception of superhero movies and games.

However, there are some flaws in the Spider Man 3 free game, as in free-roaming. For example, the background noise of the city doesn’t make you feel like you’re in New York at all. It’s more like you’re in a huge city with no citizens and cars.

Value of Spider Man 3

Even with all the flaws in every aspect, the game still presents us a really good opportunity to feel like a superhero who’s fighting the neverending battle with evil. Yes, the plot doesn’t surprise you at every corner, but the players still feel satisfied with the turn of events and how Peter Parker deals with all the issues.

The sound and graphical aspects suit the atmosphere of the game perfectly, especially counting the original voice cast.

System Requirements

Obviously enough, all the consoles (including the portable ones) don’t need any system requirements. Games are made for them specifically. It means that everything is optimized to work flawlessly. However, don’t expect PS3 and PSP versions to look the same, as their different hardware determines the differences in visuals and even gameplay.

For the PC version of SpiderMan 3 the game has the following system requirements:

  • CPU: Intel Pentium 4/Athlon XP or better, minimum 2.8 GHz
  • RAM: 1 Gb
  • GPU: Any graphics card with at least 256Mb VRAM; T&L and DirectX 9 Support (Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT/AMD Radeon X1300)
  • HDD Space: 6Gb of uncompressed HDD space + 600 Mb for Windows swap file
  • OS: Windows 2000/XP/Vista

The recommended specs are:

  • Intel Pentium 4/Athlon XP or better, with 3.4 GHz
  • RAM: 1.5 Gb
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce 7800+/AMD Radeon X1800+ (256Mb)
  • HDD Space: 6Gb
  • OS: Windows XP/Vista

Conclusion of the Spiderman 3 Game Review

Overall, this piece of superhero universe offers gamers a decent opportunity to try themselves as the famous Spider-Man. It will certainly leave a good impression, especially if you are a part of the comic book culture.

For the PC version of Spider-Man 3 the game offers decent graphics, an interesting plot, good gameplay, and impressive sounds. Also, don’t forget that it’s available on portable platforms. And even if the amount of content in them is much smaller, they still present players with a lot of opportunities to have fun.
